Check This Out - Courage

Over at Murder She Writes, best selling author Allison Brennan wrote an amazing post this morning about Courage.  Go read it.  I'll wait.

Back?

Allison's pretty awesome and her daughter is amazing.  What a truly talented young lady.

Okay, so I'll ask you the same question here that Allison asked over there:

What are you doing to face your fears?

And if you need some extra encouragement, here are some quotes to help you on your way...

Either life entails courage, or it ceases to be life. - E.M. Forster

Courage is a moral quality; it is not a chance gift of nature like an aptitude for games. It is a cold choice between two alternatives, the fixed resolve not to quit; an act of renunciation which must be made not once but many times by the power of the will. - Lord Moran

A great deal of talent is lost to the world for want of a little courage. Every day sends to their graves obscure men whose timidity prevented them from making a first effort. - Sydney Smith

Fortune favors the brave. - Virgil

Go forth and be courageous today.

  1. Wow, inspiring post over there! I need to take that inspiration and run with it - today - yes!

    Maybe!

Fear can sometimes be a crutch one uses to not face the world. Sometimes I use that crutch - sometimes that crutch is the only thing holding me up, giving me support. Sometimes, the fear is more comforting (the 'what you know') than the 'what ifs' of the world. Yep, change and the unknown are very scary things.

  2. It is a great piece...thanks for pointing it out.

I try to pay attention to the things that make me uncomfortable. Instead of avoiding them, I'm making an effort to face them....of course that doesn't mean I'm always rewarded with success...but just trying can be its own reward.

  3. Oh, I LOVE the Lord Moran quote! I have fears. I'm terrified of grasshoppers but I can live that. I'm also fear public speaking. That's not so okay. As a writer I wanted to be able to promote myself by doing readings. I think part of it is recognizing which fears really do need conquering and how you can claim victory over them in a rational way. So, I read in public, along with other writers. Group readings terrifies me less. One step at a time.

  4. Oh yeah, Janet, fear is definitely a crutch. Throw off the crutch and run with the inspiration!

Glad I could point it out to you before you got there yourself, JB. And I love your 'just trying can be its own reward'. That's it exactly.

I was terrified of public speaking, too, Karyn. That's part of the reason I made myself take Speech courses in college, and once I got past the big fear, I made it my major. You've got the right idea - baby steps. Good luck with your group readings!
